Estrus detection in cows requires not only technical skill from the farmer but also a high amount of labor investment. Existing devices for estrus detection cannot detect considerable part of estrus events; hence some of the cows are not inseminated at the correct time. This results in delayed parturition and increased maintenance costs. This guided Co. to the development of a new device aiming to improve estrus detection that improves reproduction and production performance of dairy herds.

Co. presents a new and better way of heat period detection by monitoring the heart rate of the animal. It is proved that the release of hormones during the estrus period causes changes in the heart rate of the animal and therefore monitoring of heart rate over time will easily reveal the exceptional heart rate behavior during the estrus period.

Ongoing research, conducted nowadays at the Israeli Agriculture Research Organization at Newe Ya ar research center by Dr. Arieh Brosh, Dr. Yoav Aharoni reveals very promising results. The measurement of heart rate alone is a very accurate method for identifying the estrus. Furthermore, the estrus period can also be identified from a metabolic point of view by a reduced rumination rate. The ongoing research shows that when the heart rate, the temperature and the rumination activity are all monitored over time, an extremely accurate estimation of the estrus period can be achieved.

Another advantage of Co. s system is the ability to detect the heat period in tied cattle (stanchion barns).
In North America, some countries in Northern Europe and Japan there are farms where the animals are physically tied to a stand most of the year. Due to the physical inactivity of the animals, activity measuring devices are not useful in these farms. The Co. s System will be the only reliable solution for heat detection
