Ionic liquids are also potentially useful in electrochemical applications, such as electrolytes in batteries. AUTHOR have synthesized a new class of room-temperature ionic liquids that might be suitable candidates for such applications.
"Much of our effort here is done with undergraduates. "The alliance is our part of a federally funded program for support of members of underrepresented groups in the sciences."
The group converted a novel series of solid polyammonium halide salts, previously synthesized in AUTHOR s laboratory, into nonaqueous room-temperature ionic liquids simply by replacing the halide ions with phosphate ions.
"These new nonaqueous ionic liquids, which we call liquid ionic phosphates, or LIPs, are water soluble and are not degraded by dissolution in aqueous media," AUTHOR explains. "Previously prepared hexafluorophosphate ionic liquids are water insoluble, and the ionic liquids prepared with tetrachloroaluminate anions are water reactive. LIPs can be prepared under relatively mild conditions and could provide a medium for green chemistry applications because they are easily and safely generated, relatively unreactive, and yet highly conducting.
"Although viscous, LIPs seem to be excellent candidates as nonaqueous solvent media for the performance of organic electrochemical processes, in addition to their potential applications for electrochemical storage cells," he adds. "We are continuing to investigate both the potential of LIPs as media for electrochemical processes and the syntheses of other easily prepared, water-inert, and water-insoluble ionic liquids based on phosphorus-centered anions
