In other work, AUTHOR, and colleagues have found some adult stem cells that offer nearly the same benefits as ES cells without the associated ethical ramifications. The researchers isolated rare cells that they call multipotent adult progenitor cells (MAPCs) from adult rat and mouse bone marrow cell cultures. MAPCs proliferated in culture without degrading, and unlike other types of adult stem cells, may be capable of differentiating into most cell types in the body. And transplants of MAPCs into test animals didn not cause cancer--a drawback of ES cell transplants.
