Better zeolite membranes for separations

Zeolite membranes that can separate industrially important compounds efficiently have been prepared by a seeded crystal growth method.
technique is based on growing oriented seed crystals and makes use of organic polycations to modify crystal shape and growth rate along certain crystal directions. Using the new procedure, the researchers prepared thin (about 1 µm) supported ZSM-5 zeolite membranes with in-plane crystals measuring 0.5-1
mm.
The new membranes outperformed membranes with other microstructures in separation tests using xylenes, suggesting they offer commercial promise. The team attributes the enhanced separation efficiency to straight channels that run across the membrane thickness. Also contributing to the performance is the membranes thinness, the large size of in-plane crystals, and the absence of cracks and other common crystal defects.
