DNA Probe that includes a sequence complementary to that of a specific DNA target. One end of the probe is attached to a gold electrode surface, & the other is free to move & has an electroactive ferrocene group on it. The probe has a U-shaped stem-loop configuration. This keeps ferrocene in close contact with the electrode, permitting a redox current to flow when a voltage is imposed. When target is present, the target & probe DNA hybridize. This causes the probe to straighten, moving ferrocene away from the electrode & impeding the redox current. When the electrode is washed, the probe DNA reanneals (refolds), regenerating the sensor. Multiple sensor elements with different redox potentials can potentially be put on the same electrode
