Like calcium itself, the compounds interact with calcium dependent receptors on the parathyroid glands, increasing their sensitivity to blood calcium levels and leading to diminished PTH secretion. Elevated PTH, in all of its forms, is associated with bone pain, fractures, and increased mortality.
