MANUFACTURING |
Derivable from "Digenea simplex" alga seaweed. Algae grows in militarily sensitive area between Taiwan & the Philippines. Area is under Taiwanese control. Kainic acid is then extracted from the algae. Obtention of kainic acid has not been as straightforward as COMPANY had hoped. So far, the COMPANY has extracted only 500 mg from the seaweed, a fifth of what it expected. Worse, the prodt is only 96% pure - researchers require 99% purity |

USES | It is a research tool with no possibility of becoming a clinical drug for neurological use. In brains, at low doses, it causes stimulation of brain cells. But at higher concn., it causes seizures [in live animals] & subsequently causes widespread destruction of neuronal tissue. Although it is fine for killing worms in the gut, it clearly has no ability to pass the blood-brain barrier. If you can simulate this brain degeneration in the lab, then you can try to find compds that can prevent it. The coined expression is excitotoxicity, & one of the reasons why this research goes on is because this is pretty much what happens after a stroke - glutamic acid is then the agent, kainate mimics one subset of glutamate effects. It is because its pharmacological action makes it so toxic in the brain that it is so interesting |
