OBSERVATION'S About the breath collecting apparatus (BCA)

The BCA 4.0 is the current version of the most advanced instrument currently being used for the collection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in human breath. Breath samples collected with the BCA 4.0 can be analyzed by gas chromatography for the detection of VOCs present in picomolar (10-12 mol/l ) concentrations. In practice, a person breathes quietly in and out through a disposable mouthpiece for two minutes while wearing a nose clip. Two separate sorbent traps capture samples of alveolar breath and room air. A sample of normal human breath collected with the BCA 4.0 generally yields around 200 different VOCs.

The company is currently developing a model for commercial sale (The BCA 5.0). The earlier models, 2.0, 3.0 and 4.0, have been in reliable service as research tools for over 5 years. Although the BCA has not yet been approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration and has neither UL listing or CE approval, the company has agreed that, while the commercial version is still in development, it will make a limited number of BCA 4.0s available for purchase by qualified researchers.
