CLINICAL STUDY |
Scientific demonstration of positive effects of drug on cognitive functions of elderly people. Tests demonstrated for first time, that the plant turns blood more fluid (reduces viscosity) & increases brain irrigation (by tomographic examination). The research started from group of 48 older people, all within 60-70 year age & with superior education (as it is known that more "exercised" brains during lifetime preserve better their functions). All were submitted to blood viscosity examination brain irrigation & a battery of psychological tests that evaluated memory, attention level, abstraction capacity & fine motor ability. The results were compared with those obtained with group of young people within 20-30 year age. The performance of the elderly people was 20-45% below that of younger people except in arithmetic tests (one of the abilities most preserved with advanced age), where it was above. The older people were then divided in 2 groups. One group was treated during 6 months with 80 daily mg of Ginkgo biloba extract, the other received placebo. None of the people knew that he was taking placebo or extract. All tests were repeated at the end of period, & it was observed that people who took placebo worsened their performance, wherein the inverse was true for those who ingested extract.. The improvement was most accentuated in those abilities in which the older people were most differentiated compared to young people. Functions most affected by old age recovered the most. The improvement was most accentuated in memory, fine mo tor ability, mental quickness & attention capacity. The results with tests that measured brain blood irrigation were similar. The improvement in brain irrigation was more accentuated in areas were elderly people showed increased blood circulation reduction compared with younger people. |
