PEO coatings together with a layer of PTFE have been used successfully in the textile industry, not only enabling aluminium to be used in place of steel, but also improving the overall performance of the machinery. Because of the reciprocating motion of this part, weight is critical and by switching from steel to aluminium the customer could increase the speed of operation and save energy. The problem was that the teeth on the aluminium wheel wore out too quickly against the carbon belt. This was overcome by coating with a layer of PEO ceramic and finishing with Teflon. This combination gave better wear resistance than steel in this particular scenario. |
