With increasing pressure on car manufacturers to reduce vehicle weight and the associated emissions, one customer turned to Keronite coatings to enable him to use aluminium engine pulleys. Using traditional coating methods on aluminium, our customer had been unable to achieve specified levels of wear resistance for this particularly harsh environment. Using PEO surface treatment technology, however, the pulleys easily passed the ‘sand storm’ durability test and results showed that the parts proved even more durable than the much heavier steel pulleys. The customer claimed that a conventional steel pulley wore approximately 3 mm in this test whereas under similar conditions, the PEO coated aluminium pulley simply showed signs of having been slightly polished |
