USES |
Traditionally, the use of aluminium pistons in the automotive industry has been limited because of the poor resistance to impact upon detonation and because of the high temperatures reached in the case of diesel engines. As a form of ceramic, PEO coatings provide an effective thermal barrier, reducing the temperature of the piston crown and improving overall engine performance. The hardness of the coating gives the protection needed during detonation and enables engine designers to reduce vehicle weight by switching from steel to aluminium. PEO is also being used successfully to coat the first ring groove on aluminium - and even on magnesium - pistons. It not only out-performs hard anodising on aluminium in this application but it looks like an attractive option in terms of cost. PEO coatings are also being considered for the treatment of the pin hole and piston skirts. If the whole piston were to be coated with PEO , it may be possible to replace four different coatings with one single process! |
