BASF moves in paper chemicals BASF says it is strengthening its position in paper chemicals. It will close a 20-year-old plant in Ludwigshafen, Germany, that produces carpet-backing binder and paper coating dispersions, and center paper dispersions output in a neighboring plant. Along with a year-old paper dispersions operations in Hamina, Finland, the company will have annual capacity of 440,000 metric tons, enough to satisfy European customers. The company will also cut back on carpet-backing binder in Europe in favor of paper chemicals. This decision, BASF says, was triggered by poor profits in a declining market. All told, the measures will lead to a loss of 120 jobs in Europe. Separately, BASF announced a 250,000-metric-ton-per-year capacity increase for amino glues and resins in Ludwigshafen. The increase comes from a new production line plus process optimization |
