Partners move on isocyanates BASF, Huntsman Corp., and their Chinese partners have received approval from Chinese authorities to increase capacity at their integrated isocyanates complex already under construction in Shanghai. Capacity for crude methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) will be increased from 160,000 to 240,000 metric tons per year, and toluene diisocyanate (TDI) will be increased from 130,000 to 160,000 metric tons. The total project cost is estimated at $1 billion, and production will begin in 2006. The partners announced that they will supply Bayer with crude MDI and TDI from the complex while Bayer builds its own facilities in Caojing, China. Bayer plans to start manufacturing MDI from the purchased crude MDI beginning in 2006 and will produce crude MDI itself in 2008 at a 230,000-metric-ton plant. TDI production is expected to begin at a 160,000-metric-ton Bayer facility in 2009. The firm earlier said it would be on-line with both plants by 2006. |
