Room-T ionic liquids can be used to solve one of major problems of Heck reaction. The problem is that the catalyst often cannot be recovered from reaction mixt. Researchers have now shown that the catalyst can be recycled by using ionic liquids such as 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate. [bmim] [PF6]. The Pd catalyst dissolves in ionic liquids in preference to water or alkane solvents. The researchers have coupled several aromatic compds with Et & Bu acrylates using Pd(II) acetate & other Pd catalysts dissolved ionic liquid. The team has shown for example that the Heck reaction of iodobenzene & Et acrylate can be run in a triphasic ionic liquid/water/alkane system to give > 95% yields of Et cinnamate. The water layer is used to remove salt by-prodt & the alkane layer to extract the cinnamate. The team demonstrated that the ionic liquid & catalyst can be reused over several cycles of reaction without loss of catalytic activity |
