BUSINESS INFORMATION |
Huge methanol plant slated Qatar Petroleum and PetroSA, the state oil companies of Qatar and South Africa, have agreed to develop a fuel-grade methanol project in Qatar with output of 12,000 to 15,000 tons per day. The project will use natural gas from Qatar's North Field to make methanol for electric power generation in areas where more conventional fuels don't make sense. By comparison, the current largest chemical-grade methanol plants have capacity for 5,000 tons per day. The firms note that the project will complement a gas-to-liquid fuels plant being built by Sasol and Qatar Petroleum (C&EN, July 21, page 18). |
