The technology, called (see trademark) is based on xanthates as a convenient source of radicals. Xanthates are compounds of the type RS(C=S)OR'; the thiocarbonyl group readily cleaves to form a radical. Author, says xanthates are easy to prepare; some are commercially available in large scale. The technology, he adds, "is applicable to essentially all commercial monomers," including "the notoriously difficult vinyl acetate and other vinyl ester monomers." Several metric tons of block polymers have been prepared by technology, proving the technique's industrial scalability
