Advanced BioAnalytical Services, Inc. (ABS) has signed an agreement with PE Biosystems Group to jointly pursue the development of a combined liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry (LC/MS) interface in a single miniaturized device. The LC/MS device would combine the power of ABS's electrospray ionization (ESI) nozzle technology with PE Biosystem's novel miniaturized separation systems, facilitating higher sample throughputs, and smaller sample sizes at lower cost. Miniaturized ESI mass spectrometry would provide improved selectivity and information content over spectrophotometric detection-based technologies. The LC/MS device developed under this collaboration would initially be designed to interface with PE Biosystems' Mariner ESI/time-of-flight mass spectrometer. The collaborators envision the LC/MS device to have substantial benefits for use with all PE Biosystems' LC/MS platforms particularly for use in drug discovery markets including pharmacogenomics and proteomics.
