STUDY Researchers are studying the role of other genes as well. For instance, knockout mice lacking the gene for neuronal nitric oxide synthase, an enzyme involved in neurotransmission and production of nitric oxide, are extremely aggressive. In studying these mice, Randy J. Nelson, a social and behavioral sciences professor at Ohio State University, and colleagues concluded that "neuronal-derived NO is essential to the normal function of the central 5-HT system."
