PATENT CLAIMS Process for mfg phenol, acetone & alpha-Me styrene from the prodt of cumene oxidation using a single back mixing reactor (I) & a single plug flow reactor (II); comprising in first stage (I) reacting cumene hydroperoxide, cumene & dimethylphenylcarbinol in presence of SO4H2, said IMPRO
VED process comprising
- Cleaving the cumene hydroperoxide in first stage (I) in pre
sence of 150-350 ppm SO4H2 based on prodt of cumene
oxidation, to form a reaction mixt of phenol & acetone
having 0.5-3 % water while controlling the T 55-80C by (a)
withdrawing a part of reaction mixt & passing the part to a
heat exchanger & thus removing the heat of reaction for the
cleavage of the cumene hydroperoxide in the heat exchan
ger & recycling the part of the reaction mixt to first stage (I)
- Controlling yield of alpha-Me styrene in first stage (I) < 35%
- Adding acetone to the output of reaction mixt produced in
first stage (I) in such an amount that acetone concn is 1.15-
1.8 times as much as in the reaction mixt produced from the
first stage (I)
- Without diverting the first stage reaction mixt with added
acetone supplying the resultant reaction mixt from third step
into (II)
- Separating & recovering alpha-Me styrene from (II)
