Solid State+Submerged Microbial Fermentation Reactor The PlafractorTM is a unique fermentation technology, which exploits the best of Solid substrate fermentation and Submerged fermentation. Apart from being a 'contained' fermenter using solid substrate media, it is a completely automated reactor wherein all controls, developed in-house, are executed by a central Programmable Logic Controller (PLC), making the performance repeatable, reliable and predictable. The 'containment' feature enables the processing of highly sporulating strains, Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs), apart from carrying out production of cytotoxic products, without compromising on operator safety and environmental pollution. The Plafractor replaces a number of equipment, expensive floor space, saves heavily on energy resources and is labour non-intensive. One of the most distinguishing features of Plafractor is its ability to facilitate the extraction of the fermentation product, thereby reducing downstream processing inconveniences. It is probably the only of it's kind, which allows a fermenter to extract the product that it has produced. In short, it is an outstanding example of innovative, persistent and focussed research work, which is today a proven commercial product, generating further resources for progress of the Biocon group and Technology, in general. Biocon India has been recently granted a patent for this invention in the United States. The patent applications for other parts of the world are underway.
