Compn having a voltage gradation parameter L < 0.6; L defined by the following equation with the proviso that: (a) the compn is filled between a pair of transparent electrodes provided in a cell; (b1) A pair of polarization direction control means are arranged in the crossed Nicols state on both sides of the liquid crystal cell; (b2) said means & cell are further arranged so that a light is transmitted by one of the polarization direction control means, the cell & the other of the polarization direction control means in this order; (c) said means & cell are still further arranged so that, when a voltage V is applied between the pair of the transparent electrodes, the transmittance Tr of the light transmitted in the above order increases in accordance with an intensity of the V; & (d) when V - light transmittance TR correlation is measured, a hysteresis curve is formed between the V & Tr & a tangent line Ir of the hysteresis curve within region wherein Tr steeply increases when V is increased intersects a If of hysteresis curve whithin region which is adjacent to voltage-steep increase region & which is on the higher-voltage side, at an intersection point P: - L = Sh/So wherein So is an area of a rectangular triangle having as an oblique side a straight line PQ which has as both ends, the intersection point P & an intersection point Q of an axis of ordinate (V=O) & the hysteresis curve; & Sh is an area of a region enclosed with the straight line PQ, the hysteresis curve within a region wherein Tr steeply increases, & a constant-voltage straight line which passes the intersection point P, wherein said smectic liquid crystal compn comprises at least 2 antiferroelectric liquid crystal compds - C6H13-(C6H4)2-COO-CHMe-C4H9 - C6H13-(Tetrahydronaphthalene)-COO-CHMe-C4H9 |
