"Carbohydrates are key components of the chiral pool," he went on, "and are extremely promising candidate materials from which a base of advanced synthetic intermediates can be derived. They are among the most abundant materials on earth and are often obtainable in a pure state. They are also a renewable resource." But there is a downside: "Unfortunately, carbohydrates are extremely structurally dense with a high degree of redundant--hydroxyl group--functionality." |
