It's a replacement for ozone-depleting halon 1301 (CF3Br) and for hydrofluorocarbons with significant global-warming potential. Unlike these other compounds, title compd., has zero ozone-depletion potential, very low global-warming potential, and an atmospheric lifetime of only three to five days. "It is very rapidly decomposed in the lower atmosphere." In addition, the fluoroketone, which is a liquid at room temperature, has low toxicity, is easy to transport and handle, and is quite effective at snuffing out fires, either as a liquid stream or as a gas.
