AGREEMENT |
Deal reached to store chemical plant mercury In early September, an agreement was reached under which 84 metric tons of mercury that were made surplus when a Maine chlor-alkali chemical company shut down two years ago will be moved off-site and stored away from the closed chemical plant. The state and nearby community wanted the mercury moved from the chemical plant but withheld from buyers in the developing world because of fears over its use. Mercury easily enters the biosphere and is a neurotoxic agent with a known impact on children exposed in the womb. The deal calls for Mallinckrodt Inc., the former owner of the shuttered plant, to pay to store the mercury at Mercury Waste Solutions Inc., a licensed mercury storage and recycling facility. Mercury Waste Solutions will buy the mercury and hold it at least four years |
