SUBJECT The International Union of Pure & Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) currently has a working party that is addressing the terminology issues surrounding controlled and/or living polymerization. It is led by Graeme Moad, a polymer scientist at CSIRO (Commonweath Scientific & Industrial Research Organisation) Molecular Science, Clayton, Australia.

"The group met at the Boston meeting," Moad told C&EN. "Although many people use the term 'living radical polymerization,' the current IUPAC definition precludes any radical polymerization process from being termed 'living.'"

The solution proposed at the meeting, he said, was to coin the term "ideal living polymerization" and use the more generic term, living polymerization, to cover systems that may not be quite perfect
