PATENT CLAIMS A method for analyzing gas comp. of gas mixt by IR absor
ption, said method determining the concn of CO2 gas. comp. in gas mixt, the total CO2 comp in gas mixt being the sum of a larger fraction of (12)CO2 contg the principal C isotope 12C & a smaller fraction of (13)CO2 contg the C isotope 13C, the quantitative relationship between total CO2 comp & amount of (13)CO2 contained therein being constant & being expressible in one or more formulations, the (12)CO2 being strongly absorbent of IR in first spectral band the (13)CO2 being weakly absorbent of IR in second spectral band, said method further determining a characteristic of second gas. comp of gas mixt, said second gas comp. having weak IR absorption properties resembling those of (13)CO2; said method comprising the steps of
- Providing a beam of IR radiation
- Passing said beam through sample of gas mixt for absorp
tion by comp.
- Carrying out a first filtering step comprising filtering the
beam of radiation to produce IR radiation having wave
length properties which form the second spectral band
having wavelengths in a band of 4.38 - 4.47 micro-m & in
cluding the max. absorption peak for (13)CO2
- Measuring a property of IR radiation so filtered after the ra
diation beam has passed through sample, the measured
property evincing radiation absorption by (13)CO2 in se
cond spectral band
- Determining from the measurement, the concn of CO2
gas. comp. in gas mixt using one of the formulations
- Carrying out second filtering step comprising filtering
the beam of radiation to produce radiation having wave
length properties in third spectral band selected in accor
dance with IR absorption properties of second gas comp.
- Measuring a property of radiation filtered for third spectral
band after the radiation beam has passed through sample
to determine the characteristic of second gas. comp from
absorption of IR radiation
