Process of pyrolyzing ethane to produce ethyne comprising - Heating ethane for 0.05 - 0.3 sec in pyrolysis reactor having a final heating zone at 950-1500C, using steam as diluent gas; wherein steam is used in steam/ethane ratio < 3 The pyrolysis reactor being provided with cascade of heating zones having progressively increasing T in the direction of flow, & the reactor having a ceramic reaction zone comprising series of juxtaposed channels grouped in rows & covering at least part of the length of reaction zone, paralell to its axis, the channel rows being non adjacent to one another, the reaction zone comprising a heating zone surrounding the channel rows either on said part of the reaction zone or on a part of the length of the reaction zone when the channels cover the whole length of the reaction zone, & a cooling zone following said heat. zone, wherein steam is present in molar ratio positively influencing selectivity to ethyne production, said heat. being conducted solely by indirect heat exchange against surfaces of said channels in said ceramic reaction zone, & wherein said heating is conducted so that preheating to < 950C occurs in heating zones upstream of said final heating zone |
