OUTSIDERS are watching these fledgling companies with interest. Co which operates process R&D labs in Boston; Malvern, Pa.; and Europe, acknowledges that his customers are starting to watch costs closely. "In my business today, price is becoming more of a critical factor than service or supply," he says. With a focus on process development and scale-up, Co is targeting a later stage of drug development than the likes of (A) which seeks to help companies that are still sorting through candidates. In that earlier stage speed and communication are still the paramount concerns, "but the pendulum is going to shift toward costs."
