Following board approval, Co. says it will build a new "world-scale" facility in Geismar, La., to produce hydrofluorocarbon (HFC)-245fa, a replacement for the polyurethane-foam-blowing agent hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC)-141b, an ozone depleter that will be phased out in the U.S. and Europe on Jan. 1, 2003. The plant is set to open by July 1, 2002, although commercial quantities of HFC-245a will be available by the third quarter of this year. Co is already considering a second plant in Europe or Asia.
