find that nonusers of caffeine (in coffee) enjoy a greater energetic boost from coffee than do regular users. Regular drinkers of coffee may get a jolt from that first cup, but nonusers derive even more additional energy. Too many trips to the coffee pot, however, help neither group. The first recorded users of coffee were members of the Galla tribe, in Ethiopia, about 1,000 years ago. They thought they felt a spurt of energy upon consuming ground coffee beans mixed with animal fat. Many people today think they get a charge from drinking coffee, especially upon climbing out of bed in the morning. Numerous studies have shown that caffeine taken before physical activity causes rapid and significant improvement in performance, especially in aerobic capacity. Most investigators believe that the ergogenic effect is related to the circulating level of caffeine in the bloodstream. Thus, they assume that the peak effects occur an hour after consumption. Authors set out to clarify several points, as indicated by their paper's title: "Exercise Endurance 1, 3, and 6 Hours after Caffeine Ingestion in Caffeine Users and Non-users. The study involved 19 civilian and two military subjects (15 males, six females). Thirteen of them were considered regular users of caffeine; six were considered nonusers. The subjects completed six randomized exercise rides to exhaustion on a cycle ergometer after ingesting either a placebo or 5 mg of caffeine per kg of body weight. Among the results: Caffeine improved all subjects' time to exhaustion; nonusers improved more than users. Caffeine's effect was found six hours after ingestion in nonusers, but not in users. Nonusers' heart rates were higher throughout the trials; heart rates increased with time and increased further after caffeine consumption. Caffeine produced a small but significant rise in oxygen consumption after 15 minutes of exercise in both users and nonusers. |
