STUDY Protein-resistant functional groups

New functional groups that resist the adsorption of proteins from solution have been identified. Protein adsorption to surfaces is a big problem with biomaterials. At present, polymers of ethylene glycol are the best protein-resistant materials for use on surfaces. However, they tend to autooxidize, and researchers are seeking alternatives. have determined that surfaces presenting any of the four functional groups shown resist adsorption of proteins. These groups all are polar, incorporate hydrogen-bond-accepting but not hydrogen-bond-donating units, and possess no net charge.
