Ternary nitrides catalyze NH3 synthesis
Ternary nitrides are active and thermodynamically stable ammonia synthesis catalysts under industrial synthesis conditions. Author demonstrated that Fe3Mo3N, Co3Mo3N, and Ni2Mo3N exhibit high catalytic activities in NH3 synthesisHe also found that the electronic promotion of Co3Mo3N by the addition of a small amount of cesium resulted in a catalyst with a higher activity than the commercial iron catalyst widely used in industrial NH3 synthesis. "Binary nitrides such as Mo2N usually possess low activity because the entire catalyst surface is covered with nitrogen atoms, so there is no room for dinitrogen molecules to bind and dissociate "Our working hypothesis was to design ternary nitrides such as Co3Mo3N which would bind nitrogen less strongly, thereby making room on the surface for dinitrogen dissociation
