OBSERVATION'S |
Contact claims that the market came first for resin. "What happened was that the original equipment manufacturers came to us and said, 'We don't want to continue dropping millions of dollars into these paint facilities. Co., what do you have in your portfolio to answer the call of metal replacement?' " she explains. WHILE THOSE EXACT words probably were not spoken, contact insists Co.'s chemists were looking for a weather-resistant polymer when they invented resin in 1998. Co. hasn't built a dedicated plant yet, but contact says it will ramp up production when justified by demand. Resin may yet be a blockbuster, but if anything is sure about introducing a new polymer, it's that things don't always work out according to plan. |
TECHNOLOGY |
The product, made in Mount Vernon, Ind., is coextruded into two layers--one clear, one colored--to simulate automotive paint. It is then thermoformed and molded to make the finished part. |

USES |
exterior automotive components such as body panels, potentially a 3 billion-lb market. But unlike metals and other plastics, resin doesn't have to be painted and offers good weather, scratch, chip, and chemical resistance. Fenders |
