brought a coffee can containing a sealed plastic bag with about 40 g of methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), also known as Ecstasy, a "club drug." A volunteer from the audience placed the can into one of several bags taken from other audience members.
Trooper William H. Bruce then entered with K9 Alie, a six-year-old German shepherd trained to detect marijuana, cocaine, heroin, and MDMA. Alie proceeded to sniff the bags following prompts from Bruce and within a minute was able to point out the correct bag containing the drugs. The odor signature that dogs use to detect MDMA has not been conclusively identified, Furton noted.
