Real-life forensic chemists are called upon to analyze drugs of abuse, explosives, and other materials using a variety of analytical methods, Their job is not only to decipher crime scene events, but also to provide defensible evidence that can be used in a courtroom. Among other topics, author described his work on analyzing broken glass and plastics from automobiles that had been burglarized or involved in hit-and-run accidents. For example, trace analysis of metals in automobile glass by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy or inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry can be used to accurately match glass at an accident or burglary site with glass on a damaged car or with tiny fragments that might be found on the body of a victim or a perpetrator, he explained. Future areas of focus in forensic science will be on continuing to improve analytical method sensitivity, author said, and on being able to make more analytical measurements directly in the field. |
