TECHNOLOGY Author described a procedure to make powdered coatings for paint applications. Such coatings are sprayed on cars, refrigerators, and other metal surfaces.

The standard approach involves grinding the pigment into a fine powder that's physically mixed into the plasticized polymer, a process "somewhat akin to mixing [talcum powder] in molasses," Both the grinding and mixing are energy-intensive, high-temperature processes that must be carefully controlled to avoid cross-linking the polymer, he noted. The paint industry was looking to produce low-temperature-curing paints for spraying applications.

The approach that author described is based on supercritical CO2. Polymer and powdered pigment are lumped together in an autoclave, which is filled with CO2 at high pressure. The polymer is plasticized by dissolved CO2, and then the pigment is homogeneously dispersed through the polymer via a stirrer. Fast release of pressure forces a fine-powdered mixture of polymer and pigment through a nozzle for collection. The entire operation takes place at near ambient temperature.
