STUDY Presented data on a continuing study funded by agency to examine the rela
tionship between diet & human exposure to pesticides.
In the first part of project, authors used USDA’s data on FOOD consumption to generate models of diets typical of particular age groups. For instance, “
kids drink more milk & teenagers drink more pop” The scientists’ work gives
agency a handle on the nature of such dietary differences & their impact on potential exposure to pesticides.
The researchers then reviewed more than 110 papers to assess what con
ventional & immunoassay (ELISA) methods exist for measuring PESTICIDE
content in food & pesticide METABOLITES in URINE. Agency’s group has also been developing its own ELISA methods & assessing how well they correlate with the conventional instrumental methods of GAS CHROMATO
GRAPHY & HPLC
For instance, the researchers have found good agreement between ELISA & GC methods for measuring 3,5,6-TRICHLORO-2-PYRIDINOL in urine, a biomarker for exposure to CHLORPYRIFOS. They are still working on a comparison of ELISA & GC methods for the HERBICIDE 2,4-D in urine. And they are combining enhanced solvent extraction with ELISA & GC to determine ATRAZINE in nonfat & fatty foods
