The results add support to the use of the low-vapor-pressure ionic liquids as environmentally benign replacements for halogenated solvents. The researchers reacted acetyl chloride, MCl3 (M = Al or Fe), & benzene at room T in the ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride & in 1,2-dichloroethane. In the CO region of the IR spectra, the team observed formation of MCl3-acetyl chloride adducts & the key acetylium cation [CH3CO]+[MCl4]-, which quickly disappear upon addition of benzene. The carbonyl band for the MCl3-acetophenone adduct appears immediately thereafter
