Q.: I am interested in producing ALKYL SILANES A.: The direct addition of silanes to alpha olefins is also known as hydrosilation of alpha olefins. It is catalyzed by peroxides, UV or transition metal compds. In most commercial processes a silane such as Cl3SiH reacts with alpha olefin in presence of catalyst (chloro platinic acid, H2PtCl6, molar concn > 1x10 to -8 power) to make an alkylchlorosilane CH2=CHC16H33+Cl3SiH = Cl3SiCH2C16H33 Other metals can catalyze this reaction, but chloroplatinic acid (CPA) is the preferred catalyst because of its high activity & low catalyst concn OLEFIN ORDER OF REACTIVITY Alpha > Vinylidene > Trisubstituted = Internal olefins SIDE REACTIONS: The most common side reaction is the isomerization of alpha olefins to internal olefins. Low reaction T (60 - 80C) reduce isomerization The alkyltrichlorosilane is frquently reacted with an alc to make alkyltrialkoxysilane: Cl3SiCH2CH2C16H33+3ROH=(RO)3SiCH2CH2C16H33+3HCl MeOH, EtOH & t-BuOH are the preferred alc since they can be readily removed when coating a surface (RO)3SiC18H37+3[Al-O-H)(surface)=3[Al-O-](surface)-SiC18H37+3ROH |
