Isolated a gene DERMCIDIN (DCD), that encodes a antimicrobial peptide (DCD-1) with broad spectrum of activity. The peptide is created in the SWEAT GLANDS & carried in sweat to the surface of the skin At pH & salt concn of human sweat, the 47-aminoacid peptide is active against E. coli, Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, & Candida albicans The authors believe that DCD-1 “probably plays a key role in the innate immune responses of the skin” |
