Long term exposure to TINY PARTICULATES of SOOT & S OXIDES (SOx) are linked to death from HEART disease & LUNG CANCER. The particulates are < 2.5 micro.m in size. These POLLUTANTS stem from the combustion of fossil fuels, in coal-fired power plants, mfg facilities & automobiles. For every 10 micro.g of fine particulates per cubic.m of air, the risk of lung cancer deaths went up 8%, cardiopulmonary deaths rose 6% & all deaths increased by 4% EPA national standard for fine particulates set in 1997 is 15 micro.g per cubic.m as a annual average. “Researchers found that the risk of dying from lung cancer as well as heart disease in the most polluted cities was comparable to the risk associated with nonsmokers being exposed to secondhand smoke over long period of time The researchers analyzed data from 500,000 adults who were followed from 1982 to 1998 as part of a ongoing cancer study |
