MECHANISM OF ACTION The technology works because of the catalysts “chain walking” mechanism. The alpha-diimine catalysts initiate polymn like other single-site catalysts: through a coordinating bond among the metal, olefin raw material, & polymer chain.
Author explains that the difference between the new catalysts & other technologies lies in what happens next. “In the Ni catalyst the coordination bond stays together for a longer time than in a metallocene & there’s the possibility for readdition of the metal hydride after some rearrangement in the polymer chain,”. “So that readdition forms a structure in which the metal has actually walked into the chain”. The catalyst in the middle of the chain can start a branch.
TECHNOLOGY Have the potential to make alpha-olefins obsolete in LLDPE mfg., because they can make branched polyethylene using ETHYLENE ONLY. In LLDPE production today, alpha-olefins are used as comonomers to add branches to a mostly linear polymer chain, improving processibility.
