Co.’s effort to reduce activator costs has yielded “DOUBLE ACTIVATION” In double activation, both Me groups of a group IV metallocene interact with > 2 equivalents of LEWIS ACID. A strong Lewis acid, Al(C6F5)3, is used to form the doubly activated species. The chemistry is unusual, but well studied & economically worthwhile. “This well-characterized species is tremendously more efficient in promoting ETHY LENE/OCTENE POLYMN than a monoactivated species”. Co. has found the catalysts to be 30 TIMES more active than monoactivated catalysts. “Stronger & more efficient Lewis acid activators, such as those afforded by double activation, make for better atom economy & polymer properties as well” |
