Compds are alternatives to P ylides. The unsaturated phosphonate does not dimerize, & such other functional groups as halide & aldehyde go unmolested For example, diethyl ethenephosphonate reacts with 4-Br-1-butene to give diethyl 4-Br-1E-bute ne-1-phosphonate in 82% yield & with undecylenic aldehyde to give diethyl 11-oxo-1E-undecene-1- phosphonate in 77% yield.
