The research team showed that solid UO2 dissolves in supercritical CO2 contg a complex of TBP & NO3H. The resulting uranyl nitrate-TBP complex is recovered by reducing the fluid pressure to atm pressure & then allowing the gas to expand into a collection vial. The extractant oxidizes uranium(IV) to uranium(VI) to form a complex that is very soluble in CO2 This process does not require any aq soln or organic solvent to dissolve UO2 |
