Ligand of a different kind: one that will be immobilized to serve in COLUMN RESOLUTIONS of RACEMATES. The process is not chromatographic, because the columns will bind one enantiomer firmly while letting the other through. Changing the solvent after sequential passage through 3 columns will elute the bound material from the columns for combination with more racemate for reprocessing. One example of such selector ligand is pyridine-18-crown-6, made chiral by incorporating 2 (S)-propylene glycol units into the crown ether. The ligand might serve to separate RACEMIC ALPHA-NAPHTHYL-ALPHA-ETHYL AMINE HYDROCHLORIDE. The ligand would recognize one enantiomer for binding by pi-pi-bonding between the pyridine & naphthalene rings & by H bonding between the cationic N to the heterocyclic ether oxygens & pyridine N |
