Co. already used a green anodic process to make aromatic aldehydes, & was looking at a green process to make phthalide, a fungicide intermediate. But instead of building a new plant to produce phthalide alone by a greener method - catalytic hydrogenation - "Verbund" (translated: as integrated systems) suggested in this case that it would be better to use a less green cathodic process to make the compd along with the aromatic aldehyde. The overall process turned out better than the 2 processes alone could have, with 200% electrode efficiency, no by-prodts., & savings from not building chemical plant
