Fuel cell with CsHSO4 electrolyte membrane exhibits promising electrochemical performance when operated at 150-160C. In this T range, the CsHSO4 structure loosens up, allowing the sulfate anions to rotate & facilitate proton transfer. Until now, solid acids have not been considered as viable fuel-cell electrolytes because of their soly. in water - a by-prodt. of the hydrogen-oxy gen fuel-cell reaction - & their extreme ductility at T > 125C. Because the new cells operate > 100C, water is removed as a gas & therefore does not damage the electrolyte. The electrolyte do not need to be wet for fuel cell to work
