(a) Contacting a population of quiescent pluripotent hematopoietic progenitor cells obtained by culturing a mammalian hematopoietic mononuclear cell suspension in the combined presence of at least one anti-metabolite agent & at least one early-acting growth factor under conditions sufficient to eliminate dividing cells & cells responsive to said growth factor with compd to be tested & maintaining culture under conditions sufficient for cell proliferation
(b) Recovering cells from (a) & evaluating the cells for differentiation characteristics whereby the presence of said characteristics are indicative of hematopoietic activity of compd
